Plenary session 2: Recent R&D Activities on 3DTV Broadcasting in Korea

3D imaging technology has long history of development since the discovery of stereoscopic 3D viewing principle by Sir. Wheatstone in 1838. But it seems to be only now, due to the advancement of digital technology, that it will come close to us in diverse commercial applications. Digital stereoscopic 3D technologies are becoming mature very fast. Hollywood is focusing 3D movies as new revenue source and preparing to expand their distribution to home use by blu-ray DVD. Based on its advanced ICT infra and early adaptive tendency of people to new technologies or services, Korea is actively working on technology developments and preparing for launch of new 3DTV trial services very soon. In this talk, we discuss recent R&D activities on 3DTV broadcasting in both public and private sector in Korea, including technical development, strategic trial service planning of the government, and standardization. Then ETRI's major projects in 3DTV area are introduced, including 3DTV, UHDTV, RoSE and user study.


Jinwoong Kim received B.S. and M.S degrees in Electronics Engineering both from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 1981 and 1983. He received PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, Texas, USA in 1993. He has been working in ETRI since 1983, and is now a principal member of research staff and director of Broadcasting and Telecommunications Convergence Media Research Department. He has been involved in many big projects in telecommunications and broadcasting area, such as development of TDX-1 and TDX-10 digital telephone switching system, HDTV video encoding chipset and real-time encoder system. As director of Broadcasting Media Research Department, he carried out, under the name of "SmarTV Project", several sub-projects on new digital broadcasting technologies including data broadcasting, viewer-customized broadcasting, and digital content protection. He also led projects on MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 technology development, resulting in several important contributions to the MPEG standards. In 2005, he was a core member and did a major role in producing a strategic planning report in the 3D visual technology R&D, "3D Vision 2010". He is currently a 3DTV project leader in ETRI, focusing on 3D DMB and multiview 3DTV system development. He has been a Far-East Liaison of 3DTV Conference 2007 and 2008, and has been an invited speaker to a number of domestic as well as international workshops including EU-Korea Cooperation Forum workshop on ICT and 3D Fair 2008 in Japan. He is a Vice President of Strategic Planning of Association of Realistic Media Industry(ARMI) in Korea.
